You don't say how you are making your own heating pad so I am going to assume it is with rice. When I make them I add fresh herbs such as rosemary or thyme. I just chop it up and add it to the rice. I make my heating pads out of cottony material and I would think the oils would stain. Also I grow my own herbs so I have it on hand.
